This was our second trip to Hardcastle Crags, a delightful
site in the Pennines, cared for by the
National Trust. We spent the weekend
working at Gibson Mill, which is actually more of an attraction than
the Crags themselves. It was
originally a cotton mill and later an “entertainment emporium”.
After many years of decline, the mill building and water turbine have
recently been restored by the National Trust.
The mill has no mains power - all of its energy is provided by water
and solar power and by burning timber generated by the woodland management
scheme on the site. Our task here this year involved processing timber for
use in the mill – a variety of tasks which included sawing, splitting
large chunks of wood on a machine, and then storing the timber in the
woodshed to dry out.
